How can I apply for the in-house English test?

You can apply through one of our regional offices depending on your location.
How much does the exam cost?

The exam is entirely free of charge for students.
Do I need an unconditional offer to take the in-house test?

No, but you do need a conditional offer to take the exam.
Are student from any country eligible to take the exam?

Yes, you can sit the exam from anywhere provided you have a stable internet connection and there are no restrictions that prevent you from accessing the test from within the country where you wish to take it.
What do I need to take the exam?
You will need:
- A stable internet connection
- A PC or a laptop with a webcam and an inbuilt microphone (headsets are not permitted)
- A mobile phone
- A quiet place where you can be alone to take the exam
You cannot take the test on a tablet or phone.
Can you re-sit the exam if you fail?

You cannot re-sit the exam immediately.
The time recommended before resitting will depend on the score you receive and we can advise about that.
The minimum time before resitting is 3 months. We can also advise regarding pre-sessional courses if you do not receive the result you need.
Is the exam similar to IELTS?

The exam tests all four skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading) but there are differences in the format of the exam, and it is taken wholly online.

Does the university provide some preparation material for the exam?

You will receive a practice reading/ writing exam before the test.
There is no special preparation required for the listening/ speaking test.
What is the structure of the exam?

The exam is taken on two separate days.
The Reading & Writing test is taken in one session on an online proctored platform. This part of the test takes about two hours plus time to set up. You will need to download an app and set up webcam, mobile camera and screen share.
If you pass the Reading & Writing test, then you will proceed to the Listening & Speaking test. This is taken on zoom, one-to-one with an examiner and takes about 20 minutes.

What is the pass mark for the exam?

The test has a numerical grading system from 1 – 6.

Undergraduates need to achieve an overall score of at least 3.

Postgraduates need to achieve an overall score of at least 3.5.

You also need to achieve minimum scores in each component. Some courses have different requirements, and we can advise as necessary.

1.5	A2/B1 borderline	Minimum overall score for 13-week pre-sessional. No component scores below this for 9 or 13 week pre-sessional.

As well as academic qualifications, you also need to make sure that you meet our English language requirements. This is especially important if you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country or you haven't completed a degree in English.
