Delivered by Great Ormond Street Hospital Learning Academy, this 15-credit module aims to offer learners an opportunity to develop their knowledge, establishing an understanding of the health concerns and needs of the neonate requiring critical care. The module will enable the learner to provide competent care and develop their holistic approach to complex care of a neonate and their family, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team. Throughout the module there will be exploration and discussion on the provision of neonatal intensive care services, whilst considering the ethical and moral dilemmas related to a neonate’s potentially life-threating or life-limiting prognosis.
When completed alongside Essential Care of the Neonate, the learner will achieve a Qualification in Specialty (QIS), mapped against The British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM, 2012) core syllabus for clinical competence, to provide assurance of standardisation and national application.
This module can be taken standalone or as part of the MSc Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice course.
Active learning will allow students to learn via collaboration, cooperation, and peer-based learning. Activities may include interactive lectures, clinical skills demonstration and supervised practice, small group activities, case-based discussions, workshops, practice simulations and tutorials.
Synchronous and asynchronous learning and teaching activities are delivered via a combination of study days and digital strategies at local sites or online using the Virtual Learning Environment.
Clinical skills development and simulation are delivered in fully equipped, state of the art skills labs using a range of low and high-fidelity learning modalities.
Formative assessment will be undertaken through reflective accounts and group discussions.
For the summative assessment, learners will be expected to complete a Practice Assessment Document and an objective structured clinical examination (OSCA).

To undertake this module, you must hold a current healthcare-specific professional registration and be currently working in a role which involves looking after neonates (less than 28 days old or below 44 weeks corrected gestation) in healthcare.
The fees refer to the 2024/25 academic year unless otherwise stated.
