Overview

This one-day training will introduce the learner to the knowledge and skills necessary in understanding and working with people with mental health issues. It will be of interest to all staff working in health and social care settings, including community-based practitioners, adult nurses, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings, and students on any health programmes.

Course content

The session will incorporate best practice from documents such as NICE Clinical Guideline 123 Common mental health problems: identification and pathways to care (2011), No Health without Mental Health (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2009), and Parity of esteem (Mental Health Foundation).

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the links between mental and physical health
  2. Recognise the signs and symptoms of some common mental health diagnoses
  3. Recognise when someone (including adolescents) is in mental health crisis
  4. How to respond appropriately and provide comfort to someone in a mental health crisis.
  5. Discuss options for services, help and support for someone with mental health difficulties
  6. Recognise the role of the carers/family/ supporters and their needs

Learning and teaching

Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).  The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
