Overview

This one-day training aims to introduce participants to the issue of suicide and suicide prevention among people from immigrant and refugee backgrounds (ethnic minorities) and to provide training on the Suicide First Aid guidelines for this specific population. It will be of interest to all healthcare professionals, including community-based practitioners, adult nurses, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings, and students on any health programmes.

Course content

The ultimate aim of the training is to empower people across sectors to become agents of suicide prevention in culturally diverse communities and be able to educate members of the public about potential suicide warning signs among migrant and refugee populations as well as what to do/not to do if someone close to them shows some signs and suicide risk and what they need to know as a suicide first aider.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

1. Develop awareness of the issue of suicide among people from ethnic minority groups
2. Be empowered to become an agent of suicide prevention in culturally diverse communities
3. Understand, and be able to educate others, about potential suicide warning signs among migrant and refugee populations
4. Know what to do/not to do if someone close to you shows some signs of suicide risk
5. Know what to do as a suicide first aider

Learning and teaching

Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).  The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
