Overview

This one-day training will be of interest if you're currently working in health, social care, or education or where you have professional contact with veterans and their families.

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to support veterans and their families by providing the knowledge to enable a more informed approach is designed for a wide range of health and social care professionals who experience client contact in any capacity.

This training is beneficial for all health professionals (registered nurses, social workers, psychologists, student nurses, nurse prescribers, nursing associates, health care support workers).

Course content

This course aims to develop your understanding of military mental health and allows for discussions on how you can confidently screen and offer support to veterans and their families.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

  • Define a veteran
  • Describe the problem of mental illness amongst veterans
  • Examine factors behind poor mental health in veterans
  • Discuss your duty/role to Armed forces community to provide mental health care
  • Describe Armed forces Covenant
  • Identify services/agencies involved in proving support and care to veterans

Learning and teaching

This course will be taught via synchronous online delivery using web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).

The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
