What support can I expect?

Confidential advice - on adjustments for your course and support packages, liaison with the accommodation team, and special provision during examinations
Support with applying for the
On-going support during your studies. We're on campus so you can arrange a face to face chat or a phone call to discuss your support needs. Whichever you prefer.

Deaf or hard of hearing students:

You may be using hearing aids or lip reading. Or you might need an an interpreter or note-taker for British Sign Language (BSL) or Signed Supported English (SSE).

We can discuss what you need together. And then we can arrange BSL interpreters, note takers or tutors. If you lip-read, we can let your lecturers know and help them support you. They’ll give you reading lists and handouts in advance and permission to record lectures or seminars and extended library loans.

Blind or visually impaired students:

We'll work with you, following an assessment, to help you get you the academic support you need. It may include the following:

Exam papers and class handouts can be provided in the font size you need.
You’ll have advance access to online reading lists and class materials
Guide dogs can be accommodated
Orientation sessions to help you become familiar with the campus layout
Practical assistance with moving around the campus
A library buddy and access to alternative format library resources

Mobility

If you have reduced mobility, whether you use a wheelchair or need to limit the amount you walk, we can create the right support package for you following an assessment.

Our support may include some of the following:

Adjusting your timetable so that most of your teaching is in ground floor rooms
Providing a support worker for practical sessions
Special exam arrangements if you also experience fatigue or issues affecting your ability to write
Advance access to reading lists and handouts
Permission to record lectures or seminars and extended library loans.

Specific Learning Differences

We welcome students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs), such as dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and irlen syndrome.

All of our students have unique strengths and challenges and we can help you play to your strengths.

You may need individual adjustments which can be arranged following an assessment with a disability adviser and may include:

Advance access to reading lists and handouts.
Permission to record lectures or seminars
Extended library loans and library buddies
Special exam arrangements and adjustments to the marking scheme
Work with a Study Skills Tutor to develop your academic skills.

If you think you have a specific learning difficulty, our disability advisers can offer screenings, which will tell us if you need to be referred for a full diagnosis.

Following the assessment you will receive a diagnostic report which will confirm whether a diagnosis has been made. This report can be used as evidence for a Middlesex Support Package and for the Disabled Students Allowance.

There are several steps to go through and you should be prepared for it to take up to 10 weeks to attain a diagnosis. You can find out more here. .

The Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

You may be eligible for a government-funded support package providing help with equipment, software and travel, sign language interpreters, specialist note takers and tutors for the deaf.

DSA support is provided by your funding body after a needs-assessment.

It can take up to 16 weeks to complete the DSA application process.

So, please apply as early as possible. Applications will open the Spring before your course starts.

We can help you complete the Disabled Students Allowance application form.

And we'll even call the DSA team with you if you have questions about the progress of your application.

After your DSA is confirmed:

One of our disability advisers will explain how we can support you and arrange your support package. Ideally before your course starts, so that everything is in place for the start of term.

Middlesex Disability Support

Here’s the three step process to arranging an 港彩全年历史图库 Support Package. Once you have your medical evidence ready it should take less than a week to arrange this support.

Your support package will be explained in a Learning Support Form which will detail the reasonable adjustments that will be put in place for you and include details of your learning and teaching needs, exam recommendations and library support.

I am responsible for the overall management of the Disability Support Service, SpLD Tuition and Mentoring service. I work with colleagues to support students like you and to promote disability awareness throughout the University. I'm an Accredited Member of the National Association of Disability Practitioners.
